A groundbreaking 40-minute location-based VR experience that transports visitors inside Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s mausoleum. As Line Producer, I coordinated production teams across six cities to deliver this historically accurate, large-scale immersive experience.

What are Location-Based Experiences?

Location-Based Experiences (LBE), also known as Location-Based Entertainment or Out-of-Home VR, are immersive virtual reality experiences designed for specific physical venues rather than home use. These experiences leverage dedicated spaces, specialized hardware, and professional-grade technology to deliver premium VR adventures that exceed what’s possible with consumer headsets.

Key Characteristics

Dedicated Physical Spaces

LBE venues are purpose-built environments designed around the experience:

  • Large Play Areas: 1,000+ square feet of tracked space
  • Custom Set Design: Physical props and scenery that match virtual elements
  • Environmental Effects: Wind, heat, scent, and haptic feedback systems
  • Multi-Room Layouts: Sequential spaces for narrative progression

Premium Hardware

LBE installations use enterprise-grade equipment:

  • High-End VR Headsets: Professional devices with superior optics and tracking
  • Wireless Freedom: Backpack PCs or standalone systems for untethered movement
  • Full-Body Tracking: Vests, gloves, and accessories for complete immersion
  • Synchronized Systems: Multiple headsets connected for shared experiences

Operational Infrastructure

Professional venue management:

  • Staff Facilitation: Trained operators guide users through experiences
  • Session Management: Timed bookings with throughput optimization
  • Safety Protocols: Monitored play areas with real-time oversight
  • Maintenance: Regular hardware calibration and content updates

Types of Location-Based Experiences

Free-Roam VR

Players walk naturally through large tracked spaces:

  • Examples: The VOID, Zero Latency, Sandbox VR
  • Capacity: 2-8 players per session
  • Duration: 15-45 minutes
  • Technology: Optical tracking, backpack PCs, haptic vests

Seated/Standing Experiences

Stationary or limited-movement installations:

  • Examples: IMAX VR, VR arcades, museum installations
  • Capacity: 1-50+ simultaneous users
  • Duration: 5-60 minutes
  • Technology: Standalone headsets, synchronized playback

Theme Park Attractions

Large-scale installations integrated into entertainment venues:

  • Examples: Terracotta Warriors VR, Disney VR experiences
  • Capacity: 50-150+ visitors per hour
  • Duration: 20-60 minutes
  • Technology: Custom hardware, motion platforms, environmental effects

Cultural & Educational Installations

Museum and heritage site experiences:

  • Examples: Historical recreations, archaeological sites, art galleries
  • Capacity: Variable, often self-paced
  • Duration: 10-90 minutes
  • Technology: Focus on accuracy and educational value

My Work in Location-Based Experiences

Terracotta Warriors: Secrets of the First Emperor’s Mausoleum

As Line Producer on this groundbreaking LBE project, I coordinated the creation of a 40-minute immersive journey through Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s mausoleum.

Scale & Scope:

  • Three Stages: Each over 2,000 square feet
  • Throughput: 150 visitors per hour
  • Technology: 100+ VIVE Focus Vision headsets synchronized via WiFi
  • Location: Xi’an, China (next to the actual archaeological site)

Production Challenges:

  • Coordinating teams across 6 international locations (LA, Atlanta, Malta, UK, Taipei, Xi’an)
  • Delivering theme park-quality experience on mobile VR hardware
  • Ensuring historical accuracy while maintaining engaging storytelling
  • Managing cultural and language barriers across distributed teams

Technical Achievements:

  • Real-time synchronization of 100+ headsets
